This is just a pastel sketch I did quickly, watched in the main by a small lizard, which kept darting out from beneath my seat to see what I was doing. Watercolour of a woman from the Himba tribe.  She is married, as you can see from her headdress. The Himba women coat their skin and hair with a mixture of henna, ochre butter and incense making their appearance very striking.  They are reputed to be among the most beautiful of African peoples. This is the cover design for the book of that title, which I was commissioned to illustrate. I used mixed media for these pictures, with watercolour paintings overlaid with pastel drawing. “Sam” is modelled on a real boy of that name, co-incidentally, and all the people in the book are modelled on actual people of my acquaintance.
